Hello there, bookworms and happy Wednesday! We’ve officially made it to the middle of the week. Now take a deep breath and exhale, we’re getting through this!
I can’t speak for everyone, but obviously, times are strange. They’re strange, and they’re scary. It’s easy to wind up feeling lonely, isolated, and depressed. With a pandemic and quarantine comes a shift in energy so even though many of us are still home (and safe.. remember that!) it becomes increasingly difficult to use our time wisely. Personally, I’ve found myself using my free evenings to scroll through my phone, watch television repeats, and sleep more which all leaves me extremely frustrated because I’m not focusing on being creative. I have writing to do, editing to finish, new stories circulating in my head, and a growing TBR pile I haven’t touched in weeks, but I’m still making very little progress with any of it. I’m constantly dropping the ball lately and it’s exhausting just to think about. Still, we’re here and surviving another day and doing the best we can, right? So we trudge on. That being said, why not bring you a book review! This is one I read awhile back but since I’m still backlogged on all my blog posts, I’m getting to it now. Tonight, let’s talk about The Wives by Tarryn Fisher.
New York Times bestselling author Tarryn Fisher delivers a pulse-pounding, fast-paced suspense novel that will leave you breathless. A thriller you won’t be able to put down!
Thursday’s husband, Seth, has two other wives. She’s never met them, and she doesn’t know anything about them. She agreed to this unusual arrangement because she’s so crazy about him.
But one day, she finds something. Something that tells a very different—and horrifying—story about the man she married.
What follows is one of the most twisted, shocking thrillers you’ll ever read.
You’ll have to grab a copy to find out why.
So, let me start by saying that if you follow this blog or any of my social media accounts, you know I’ve admired Tarryn’s work for awhile. She knows how to screw with your emotions, tug on heartstrings, and keep you guessing. She also makes you feel something for her villains when they present themselves. This is not the first book of hers I’ve read, but this is one of the first ones I have to review when I can’t really say too much without giving away what happens. I’ll do the best that I can!
This is one of those stories that do what all classic thriller/mystery/suspense novels do, it keeps you guessing. Every single character in this book isn’t quite who they seem and there’s always something going on behind the scenes.
Thursday is part of a polygamist marriage with her husband Seth. Thursday is also at war with herself right from the very beginning about snooping into Seth’s life to find out more about his other wives to find out why being with her just isn’t enough. She tells herself to let sleeping dogs lie, but we all know to get the ball rolling, that isn’t going to happen. The more she digs into his life, his phone, his clothes, his closet, etc, the more she uncovers and winds up resenting him over. The more she knows means the more she has to play the role of a perfect wife so that Seth doesn’t catch onto what she’s been up to during the days of the week they aren’t together. Only, things begin going wrong and it turns out that Seth may actually be a step or two ahead of Thursday playing detective.
This story is full of twists and turns, close calls, sensuality, danger, conniving characters, and so much more. I’ve not only spent years admiring Tarryn’s compelling stories, but also her writing style. I admire and envy the way she masters becoming her characters every single time, and how she got into the headspace of a polygamist marriage for The Wives is beyond me. I cheered for these characters, I screamed at them (internally of course), and held my breath, completely full of anxiety as to what would happen next.
If you’re looking for a solid, fast-paced, chest-clenching book that will leave you breathless on the edge of your seat and is filled with pages you won’t want to put down, you’ll need to grab a copy of this book if you haven’t already. Take a break from the house, step outside, get some sun and fresh air, and lose yourself in the thrills and chills this story offers you. The Wives grabs you right from page one and keeps you guessing even after you’ve reached The End.
Until next time, bookworms, stay well, stay safe, and stay sane out there. Happy reading! xx
