Good afternoon, bookworms! Happy Sunday! I keep trying to bring you guys more book reviews and literary goodies, but I keep trying to catch up on my reading for all the requests I’ve received lately and I’ve also gotten sucked into youtube vlogs for my vacation. In just under three weeks I’ll be on a plane headed to the happiest place on earth (WDW) and I can’t wait! I’ve been a bajillion times and my family are even DVC members, but I can’t help but feel giddy every time I’m preparing to go see the mouse. I’m in desperate need of a break to step away from life and even technology for a bit and just have some child-like fun.
Anyway, before I take off, I have a fairly decent amount of posts to bring your way, as I’ve mentioned in previous ramblings, and that will continue now with a new adult, paranormal romance, Mistress of the Vampire by Elena Darkmoon. This is the first of her books I’ve read, and it’s not often I read paranormal or vampire stories, but this was a fairly enjoyable story.
Lena is a college student not only stuck in a routine, but also in need of a job. When she becomes a maid at the manor of sexy and mysterious billionaire, Magnus, her life takes a completely one-eighty into the unknown. The pair are not meant for one another, but they can’t seem to stay away from each other. She is a regular girl just trying to earn some money and graduate from school while he is… not of this world.
When Lena’s grandfather passes away, she discovers an unknown family history that throws yet another curve ball into her life. She needs Magnus’s help and protection more than ever, but their different histories threaten to make the rift between them grow even bigger and break them apart completely.
This was an interesting and darker read that reminded me of my high school days when I used to tune into Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There was action, drama, romance, and some steamy chemistry. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if it were a bit longer and had even more detail. The characters jumped around a little with Magnus appearing and disappearing within seconds and that left me feeling disconnected from them on occasion. The tension and chemistry they’d build up so well would fizzle in an instant because he’d evaporate and leave not only Lena, but also myself hanging wondering what just happened.
I’m pretty hit or miss with paranormal romances when it comes to vampires. Maybe my dislike of Twilight tainted any future experiences I’d have, so I am choosy about which books I’ll read that star a supernatural being, but I’m thankful I enjoyed my time with Lena and Magnus.
