Happy Friday-Eve, bibliophiles! Happy belated Independence Day to those of you who celebrated. It’s been a few days but it’s time for a long overdo book review! I may have had some work craziness mixed in with the holiday insanity, but thankfully, I’ve also been doing a fair chunk of reading. I have to admit that my lack of discipline when it comes to compartmentalizing my tasks post-work day has led to the delay in my updates. However, I’ve been devouring some really amazing stories so I’m really happy to talk about them with you guys! Let’s get to tonight’s review before I keep rambling.
Love My Way is the first novel I’ve read by Kate Sterritt. I have to admit, the cover sucked me in while I was scrolling through my Facebook feed one day. Another author had posted a rave review and I couldn’t help but head over to Goodreads and check out a summary. It was vague and mysterious and made me download the Kindle edition so that I could get to it right away.
Emerson Hart is a girl who lost her passion. Whether it was her desire to create beautiful art or simply her zest for life, she’s not who she used to be. She’s merely surviving with few friends and a job in a bakery, but there’s a lingering feeling that something is… off in her life.
Growing up a bit of a loner, Emerson always had her creativity and imagination. Inspired by an artist she encountered at a young age, she lives to design beautiful things. One day, at the age of ten, when she’s building a piece out of dirt and rocks in the clearing where she grew up, she meets Mereki. He’s the boy who changes her life. He’s her support and her champion. From the moment they say hello, the two become the best of friends and he does nothing but encourage her. He’s still there for her years later when she attempts to sell her first piece of art. It’s on that fateful night that their lives change forever.
Fast forward five years to the present, and Emerson is where we first met her in the bakery. When she meets Josh, the son of one of her clients, he suggests she come to an art therapy class he teaches. He can see pain and a story in her eyes, and he fully intends to get to the bottom of it, no matter the pain it might cause for either of them. It’s up to her whether or not she’ll fall in love with her passion all over again. Torn between her past and her present, Emerson has some life-altering decisions to make. Decisions that will change her forever no matter which side she picks.
For most of this story, I was fully prepared to give it one or two stars. There was something about the past and present interactions of the three main characters that didn’t sit right with me. I knew Emerson’s story, but there was something about some of her actions that caused my respect in her to decline. When I began to see where this story was heading, and the pieces came together, I changed my mind.
I don’t want to say too much without giving away surprises. You’re honestly better going in a bit blind to the whole thing. The blurb for the book is obscure for a reason. I must insist on telling you that this is a beautiful and painful tale that we can all relate to on some level. Be your own Person Hart and search for your happiness, starting with this book.
