The Unhoneymooners

Hello there, bookworms! Long time, no see! I don’t think I’ve ever gone so long without posting or giving you an update unless I was on vacation. Unfortunately, that was not the case this time.

I got back from Boston just before Memorial Day, got my life together and organized before going back to work that Tuesday, and the day I went back to the office, I didn’t feel quite right, but I continued to work the rest of the week anyway. My mother had a cold not long before I was under the weather so I chalked it up to a bad cold… until last Friday. Last Friday I got to work and was there all of 40 minutes before I realized I felt so bad that I needed to go to an urgent care. To make a long story short, turns out I had/have pneumonia. Needless to say, I just began to re-join the land of the living this past Thursday. I’m still adjusting to re-gaining my energy, building an appetite, and getting into the swing of things. I still have medications to finish and it’ll honestly probably take me a little while longer to fully recover, but I’ve been away from writing, blogging, and even reading for too long, so I need to jump back in!

Now that I’ve rambled endlessly to give you a bit of an update, I think it’s time to get to a long-overdo book review! Like I said, I didn’t read much while I was on the mend. If I’m being honest, I spent most of my time either sleeping or staring at my tv, but earlier this week when I was actually able to sit upright, I decided to read the latest from Christina Lauren in order to kind of kick off that summer vibe. Let’s get to it and review The Unhoneymooners!

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.

This was one of those fun, quick, summer beach reads. If you’re a regular to this blog, you know I love my Christina Lauren books. They always write really awesome, sexy, and humorous stories that I can’t get enough of, and Olive and Ethan were no exception.

Going on vacation with someone you can’t stand sounds like a nightmare to me, but these two definitely made the most of it. They’re in an awkward situation, but being each others’ company for 10 days means they’ll need to resolve their differences as best they can and play nice. After a few days in paradise, make nice, they did.

I enjoyed this story, and it moved fast, so even if I wasn’t feeling great, I found myself turning the pages. Christina Lauren books are ones I will order every time without question, and this book was no exception, but with all the stories of theirs I’ve read, this one wasn’t my favorite. While I enjoyed the banter and the tension building between Ethan and Olive, it almost seemed like this story moved too quickly. I also didn’t feel like I fully connected with the characters, maybe because I felt like I didn’t learn enough about them or their back stories were a little vague or rushed.

Maybe it was because I’m still reeling from reading the After series by Anna Todd, or maybe it’s because I haven’t been myself for well over a week, but while I liked and enjoyed this book, unfortunately, I just didn’t love it the way I really wanted to or usually adore Christina Lauren’s work.

That being said, I still think this is a great book to bring with you to the beach, pool, or on vacation if you’re looking for a way to soak up the sun and relax.

Until next time, guys, happy reading!
